Project news

The second edition of the DME Sustainable Mobility Workshop took place in Berlin on 24th May 2019. Thangavelu Jayabalan (INERIS) presented the FLEDGED process for advanced DME production from biomass. Download the presentation here. The program included the display and demonstration of the world's first DME-powered passenger vehicle (Ford Mondeo) built by an OEM. The discussion has been focused on updates from stakeholders representing powertrain, fuel, power and equipment producers.
Two works on catalysts for DME synthesis have been presented by Dalia Liuzzi (ICP-CSIC) at the International Symposium on Green Chemistry (ISGC 2019) on 13-17th May 2019 at La Rochelle (France). The topics are: “Heteropolyacid based catalysts for the production of dimethyl ether from methanol. Effects of reaction pressure and nature of the support” and "Effect of copper loading and CO2/CO ratio for the production of methanol over Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts from biomass-derived syngas". Find the presentations in the download section of the website.
The next step in Sorption-Enhanced DME synthesis! This week we started with cyclic operation on our 2L/TRL4 reactor for DME synthesis.
A poster on the FLEDGED system has been presented by Alessandro Poluzzi (POLIMI) at PhD Winter School AIMSEA 2019 (Pisa, Italy, 25-28 March 2019) - Fluid Machinery and Energy System Engineering. The poster is available for download in the presentations section of the website, while a more comprehensive presentation of the results is provide in the public deliverable D4.1 "Preliminary process simulation", that is available in the download section.
The third FLEDGED project newsletter has been released: have a look to the last progresses of the project! Experiments of wood biomass gasification in the 200 kWth dual fluidized bed facility at the University of Stuttgart SEDMES testing in lab-scale test facilities, the so-called “Spider” and “CaTe” facilities, at ECN part of TNO Simulations of DME synthesis reactor considering different catalysts configurations Preliminary techno-economic analysis of the complete FLEDGED plant •Development and test of two series of catalysts for methanol and DME synthesis at CSIC ICP Characterization of materials for risk assessment by INERIS Read more
BeSustainable online magazine just published an article about FLEDGED project, describing the main features and the advantages of the proposed technology. BE-Sustainable is a source of news, information and resources on biomass, bioenergy and the bioeconomy, as well as it is the official magazine of the EUBCE conference. The general presentation of the project can be found in our infographic or in the public material download section.
ECN and POLIMI presented FLEDGED project at XXIII International Conference on Chemical Reactors – CHEMREACTOR 23 (November 5-9, 2018, Ghent, Belgium). Main topics are sorbent and process for CO2 and H2O sorption enhancement in chemical reactors, as well as the effects of intraparticle diffusion phenomena on dimethyl ether direct synthesis. The presentations given by Jurriaan Boon (ECN part of TNO) and Simone Guffanti (POLIMI) are available in the download section.
The 4th FLEDGED consortium meeting in Madrid has been hosted by CSIC ICP on 15-16th November. It started with the visit of the Ecohispanica plant, which can turn municipal solid wastes into a sterilized fuel to be gasified in the FLEDGED gasifier. The first results of the project are available and the advancement of the project is discussed: look for the presentations, the public deliverables and the scientific publications on the website.
An open access publication about "Reversible deactivation of γ-alumina by steam in the gas-phase dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether" has been published on the International Scientific Journal "Catalysis Communication" by ECN part of TNO. Have a look to this interesting work here.
The analysis of "Sorption enhanced gasification (SEG) of biomass with CO2 capture for the production of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) and DME for transport sector with negative emissions" has been presented during the 14th International Conference on GreenHouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-14) held in Melbourne in October, 21st-26th. The full presentation is available in the download section. This work is a collaboration work between POLIMI, USTUTT, ICB-CSIC and QUANTIS. The basic performance results obtained for the balances of two synthetic fuel production plants are assessed: the SEG-SEDMES plant studied in FLEDGED and CH4 production for comparison.
